Definition of web-based application

Software that uses HTTP as its primary communications protocol, and delivers web based information in HTML. Also called web application.

To get an information at your fingertips and internet banking is a one-stop platform that provides information, tools and tips to help customers with our banking needs.


An example of a programming language used to develop web-based application.

  • Hypertext Preprocessor = PHP
  • Common Gateway Interface = CGI
  • Java Server Pages = JSP(Java)
  • Active Server Page = ASP.Net(C#).

An example of a DBMS used in the web-based application.

An advantage of web-based application (compared to non web-based application)

Advantages of Web Applications
  • No special configuration or changes are need on users PCs.
  • Lower costs.
  • Centralised data is secure and easy to backup.
  • Updates can be made quickly and easily.
  • Online training can be completed at user's own time and pace.
  • Always up-to-date.

Disadvantages of Non Web Applications
  • Need a special configuration or authoring on users PCs.
  • High costs.
  • Dificult to backup.
  • Updates can be made in log time and troublesome.
  • User just only can read the webpages, no intraction with  user.
  • Always not up-to-date.
